Quick Draw McGraw Title Card

The Quick Draw McGraw Show is the third cartoon television series by Hanna-Barbera, starring a gun-toting horse named Quick Draw McGraw who stood on two legs. This series was created based on the successes of Ruff & Reddy and Huckleberry Hound. The show made its syndicated debut in 1959. As with their other series it was sponsored by Kellogg’s. Of course, Daws Butler was the premiere voice. In their inimitable style it was a half hour format featuring three 7 minute productions featuring Quick Draw and his sidekick Baba Looey (named for Desi Arnez’s popular song Babalu), the father and son dog duo, Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy and the cat and mouse pair of detectives named Snooper & Blabber.

The show was created to maintain the popularity of The Huckleberry Hound Show which was produced a year earlier. Trying to appeal to the entire family they satirized a wide variety of genres which were popular on television at the time. This time they took on the western.

El Kabong

Quick Draw McGraw could best be described as an unintelligent and gangly mustang who, although altruistic ended up wreaking havoc in the Old West. Ever clumsy he had as much trouble getting his gun out of the holster as he had shooting it and if he did manage to shoot he usually ended up shooting the wrong target. His sidekick, a Mexican burro name Baba Looie who always referred to him as Quicks Draw and was more sensible always tried his best to help. Usually depicted as a sheriff of a nameless generic old western town, a horse riding a horse, he was a takeoff of the tried and true lawmen of that generations popular western television shows.

Quick Draw had an alter ego who proved to be as popular as Quick Draw himself. He was the masked vigilante El Kabong (a takeoff of the popular Zorro who was known in Spanish as “El Caba-Zorro”). Keeping his klutziness and altruistic nature he would swoop down on his foes holding a rope and yelling “Olayyee”. He would then hit them over the head with his acoustic guitar shouting “Kabong” as he smacked them.

:

Yipee yi-o ki-a,
Galloping all the way
Great big star on his chest.
Outdraws all of the rest.
Fastest gun in the west.

Yipee yi-o ki-a,
Riding around your way,
Here comes Quick Draw McGraw.
The high-falutin’est,
Fastest shooin’est,
Cowboy you ever saw.
That’s Quick Draw McGraw.
